Jackie is currently a senior faculty member teaching major courses in the Philippines Studies program. She earned her BA Social Science (Social Anthropology) degree at the University of the Philippines Baguio and is currently an MA Anthropology candidate at the Ateneo de Manila University. She is passionate about integrating One Health in the local research she conducts together with the IPs of Palawan.

AJ earned his Master’s degree in Wildlife Studies from the University of Philippines Los Baños. Aside from being a full-time educator, he has dedicated his research on studying human-wildlife conflict, specifically the interactions of the Philippine Warty Pig and the local communities in Mt. Von has a Master’s degree in Biology from the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology and is currently a Davao-based university instructor teaching biology. He is an ecologist who has handled multiple research projects on biodiversity assessments of various ecosystems located in Mindanao.

Carah is a licensed physician who earned her medical degree at the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute. Prior to becoming a hospitalist and working on the health of humans, she earned her Master’s degree in Wildlife Studies from the University of the Philippines Los Baños and has conducted research on the health of our country’s endemic leopard cat species.

Jose is a licensed agriculturist and has a master’s degree in Entomology (Insecticide Toxicology) from the University of the Philippines Los Baños. As an entomologist, he is involved in various projects related to the bio-ecology of insect pests, biological control agents, and their management of different crops. As a One Health fellow, he believes that the One Health Approach is the best solution in addressing future pandemics.

Laila is a registered Psychologist and Psychometrician who both earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and BA in Psychology degree from the Ateneo de Davao University. She is a mental health youth coach generates and implements project proposals for outreach programs for the Muslim communities. As a Muslim, Laila hopes to incorporate the practices of Halal, which goes beyond just food consumption, as a means to address One Health concerns.

Jayvee is a registered nurse who earned his Master’s degree in Public Health at the Saint Louis University, Baguio City. He is also currently finishing his Ph.D. in Indigenous Studies at UP Baguio focusing on Indigenous Health and Spirituality. As an indigenous person belonging to the Ibaloi-Kankana-ey of Benguet Province, he advocates for Indigenous Peoples’ health through the One Health approach.

Jabez earned his doctorate degree in Environmental Science from the University of the Philippines Los Baños and also has taken intensive landscape ecology courses at the International Association for Landscape Ecology in Italy. He is passionate about studying the complex and diverse landscape structures of permaculture, which is a sustainable and regenerative design philosophy used in agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and environmental management.

Emmanuelle finished his Doctor of Medicine degree at the West Visayas State University, Iloilo City and finished his Bachelor’s degree in Biology at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. He also founded a project that mapped marine turtle nesting sites in Cavite coast line and co-founded an initiative to strengthen the mental health status of Ilonggo youth during the pandemic through a holistic psychosocial intervention

Ryan earned his master’s degree in Aquaculture at Ghent University as a VLIR-UOS scholar and is also finishing his second master’s degree in Sustainable Leadership and Governance at the De La Salle University, Dasmariñas. One of his goal is to introduce and incorporate the One Health approach in policies involving environment, health, and governance especially in the local government units.

Carlo is a Public Health graduate from UP Manila and has a background in neglected tropical diseases and has had experience working with both the national and regional public health communities through different projects. He has also been involved in the management and implementation of projects across different disciplines including medical parasitology, medical anthropology, environmental health, and infectious diseases, among others.

2023 Next Generation One Health Philippines Primer Video
One Health is a multidisciplinary approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.
The Next Generation One Health Philippines is a program that seeks to strengthen the application of this approach in the Philippines by building domestic capacity for One Health transdisciplinary research and knowledge translation in tackling wildlife trade and biodiversity loss as drivers of infectious disease emergence.
This project was established by the Planetary and Global Health Program of the St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine, and made possible through the support of the International Alliance Against Health Risks in Wildlife Trade.
2023 Next Generation One Health Philippines Fellowship In-person Workshop
NGOHP’s 15 fellows are finally together for its first-ever in-person workshop!
The in-person workshop is a 4-day intensive seminar composing of different activities that will strengthen the fellows’ transdisciplinary research capabilities and create meaningful projects under the One Health approach to better the environment and the lives of people and animals.
May this be the beginning of fruitful collaborations and research development to put an end to infectious disease emergence through wildlife trade and biodiversity loss.
International Alliance Against Health Risks in Wildlife Trade’s “Let’s Talk About” featuring NGOHP
Let’s Talk About is a new format organized by the Alliance to give partner institutions the opportunity to enhance the visibility of their projects, gather feedback, and collaborate within the Alliance’s network of institutions and experts.
The Next Generation One Health Philippines was featured in the inaugural session of the Let’s Talk About series. During the session, the fellows of NGOHP presented a project pitch highlighting the salient points of their research, followed by a Q&A session where they shared their personal experiences in developing their studies. They also explored potential collaborations with other organizations beyond the region.
Juan Health Conversations Episode 1: Exploring the Link Between Wildlife and Pandemics
Heeding the call to promote the One Health approach in addressing illegal wildlife trade and biodiversity loss, the Next Generation One Health Philippines (NGOHP) Program is organizing Juan Health Conversations, a three-part webinar which aims to localize and introduce One Health to every Juan!
For our first episode, we will be exploring the link between wildlife and pandemics through our One Health fellows from the medical and biological field!
Juan Health Conversations Episode 2: Community Participation in Conservation and Sustainability
With the hopes of cultivating a greater understanding and interest around the One Health approach for Filipinos, Next Generation One Health Philippines (NGOHP) started Juan Health Conversations, which covers One Health and its applications across different disciplines and sectors in the Philippines. Supported by the International Alliance against Health Risks in Wildlife Trade, NGOHP is one of the projects of the Planetary and Global Health Program (PGHP) of the St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine – William H. Quasha Memorial (SLMCCM-WHQM).
Juan Health Conversations Episode 3: One Health Policy and Governance
To foster interest and a deeper understanding of the One Health approach among Filipinos, the Next Generation One Health Philippines (NGOHP) hosted the Juan Health Conversations, a three-part webinar series that delves into the concepts of One Health and its application in the Philippines. Supported by the International Alliance against Health Risks in Wildlife Trade, NGOHP is one of the projects of the Planetary and Global Health Program (PGHP) of the St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine – William H. Quasha Memorial (SLMCCM-WHQM).
Course Content Materials
This self-paced course equips fellows with in-depth knowledge and understanding on the principles of One Health, wildlife and zoonotic diseases, and the application of One Health in solving these challenges. The topics covered will strongly focus on addressing the important issues of wildlife in relation to health in the local setting, such as: wildlife trade, zoonotic spillover, and emerging diseases, as well as the different tools that can be utilized to tackle these issues.
