WHAT IS ONE HEALTH?

As defined by the One Health High Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP), One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems.

It recognizes the fact that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider enviroment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent.

The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate change and contributing to sustainable development.

Next Generation One Health Philippines?

The Philippines is a biodiversity hotspot and a major hub for the global wildlife trade, many of which are identified as carriers of zoonotic pathogens. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has also brought attention to wildlife trade and biodiversity loss as drivers of infectious disease emergence. Recent zoonotic disease outbreaks have shown that different perspectives should be considered in addressing the drivers of emerging infectious diseases. The health of the human population is tied to the wildlife and the environment we live in, and the key to preventing future pandemics is to adopt a more holistic approach that encompasses not just the health of humans, but as well as the health of animals and of the planet.

In order to prevent the next pandemic, there is a need to create a new cadre of emerging scholar-practitioners who are equipped to apply the One Health approach to navigate complex transdisciplinary and cross-sectoral spaces. Thus, with support from the International Alliance Against Health Risks in Wildlife Trade, the Planetary and Global Health Program of the St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine established the Next Generation One Health Philippines (NGOHP) Fellowship Program in order to bring together early-career scholars and practitioners from diverse backgrounds to receive training in the One Health approach.
